Just today I was speaking with someone about how truisms like “Look on the bright side” can be so invalidating. And I’m sorry you’ve experienced that first hand.
I’ve heard this same sentiment from others. Most of the time I think people offer empty statements like those up to make themselves feel better, because they are made uncomfortable by pain and disability. They don’t know what to say and blurt out “think positive! it’ll get better!” because it makes them feel like they’ve done something to help- however misguided that actually is. I’ve taken to responding with something like, “I sense you’re trying to be positive, but what would be more helpful is…”.
